Chapter 18

"This is Mac," Jeff said with pride, stroking the nose of the handsome, dark bay horse that leaned its head toward us over the pasture fence. "He’s an Irish Thoroughbred." Moving a little to one side, Jeff then greeted the other giant who had responded to his whistle. This one was light gray and looked older. "And this is Sylvester, an American Thoroughbred. He’s the first horse I ever owned. Twenty-two years old now."

I smiled and nodded politely as my heart rate accelerated. I had nothing against horses. Per se.

"And this—" he continued, his face practically beaming with pleasure, is the woman in my life." A pretty chestnut mare strolled up behind the other two, then thrust her nose over the fence as close as she could get to her owner, which happened to be directly in front of me. I stepped back, and Jeff moved in to give her an affectionate greeting. "You’ll like her," he said to me. "She’s a real sweetheart. Her name’s Ellie."

"A quarter horse," I gambled. Horse breeds hadn’t been covered in vet school, but I did grow up watching the Kentucky Derby, and I knew a thoroughbred when I wasn’t seeing one.

Jeff smiled, an unusually captivating smile that made me even more nervous than I already was. "Yep. You want to ride her? It’s a gorgeous day for it. Best way to see the farm."

I swallowed. All I had to do was say no. I could feign illness or renege on my previous claim of having plenty of time. Or I could tell him the truth, after which he would almost certainly give me one of those smirky, superior looks he was so good at as a teenager. How bad could that be?

"Sure," I heard myself say. "Sounds like fun."
